Volta Structural Energy raises 1 million euro in a capital increase led by Tech4Planet

The National Technology Transfer Hub of CDP Venture Capital, and Leonardo S.p.A.

Milan, 22/01/2024 — Volta Structural Energy, a deeptech start-up at the forefront of structural battery technology, is excited to announce the completion of a 1 million euro seed investment round. The deal was led by Tech4Planet, the National Technology Transfer Hub for Environmental Sustainability launched by CDP Venture Capital, and by Leonardo S.p.A, a global high-tech leader in aerospace, defence and security.

Volta Structural Energy

Volta Structural Energy specialises in developing cutting-edge structural batteries: structural panels that can be used to build aircraft, car or ship frames but that also store energy thanks to the materials they are made of.
This highly integrated, innovative approach to multifunctional systems allows Volta to use the mass and volume of structures – such as car roofs, aircraft fuselages and floors, or boat hulls – to store electricity, eliminating or significantly reducing the need for conventional battery packs, which are heavy and bulky payloads that considerably limit range.
The result is the ability to maximise the energy storage and therefore also the range of a given system, without reducing the space or mass needed to carry passengers or goods.

Ioni-Sodio

Volta combines its innovative architecture with next-generation sodium-ion chemistry, offering high levels of safety and durability and a renewed supply chain based on abundant, sustainable materials.
This in-house know-how positions Volta Structural Energy as the only Italian company – and among the first in Europe – to develop energy storage technologies that harness the vast potential of sodium chemistry.

Volta’s patented technology has the potential to revolutionise multiple transport sectors, providing a lightweight, efficient energy storage solution that not only improves the performance of current electric systems, but could also enable the energy transition in sectors that are still reliant on fossil fuels such as aviation, shipping and heavy-duty ground transport.

The investment

The 1 million euro investment will allow Volta Structural Energy to ramp up its research and development efforts and accelerate the commercialisation of its groundbreaking technology. The funds raised will support key initiatives including prototype upgrades, expansion of the research team and rigorous testing to ensure the reliability and efficiency of the structural battery systems.

"We’re excited to have Tech4Planet and Leonardo S.p.A. on board as top-tier strategic partners on our journey to advance structural battery technology and provide the transport industry with new tools for supporting the energy transition," said Tommaso Randolfi, CEO and co-founder of Volta Structural Energy. "This fundraising round is a testament to the trust investors have in our vision and the great potential of our innovative solutions."

"We believe Volta Structural Energy’s approach to structural batteries aligns perfectly with our mission to invest in impactful, sustainable deeptech start-ups," said Claudia Pingue, Senior Partner and Head of the Technology Transfer fund at CDP Venture Capital."We are confident this investment will support the development of cleaner, more efficient energy storage solutions that can enable electrification in complex sectors like aviation and heavy transport."
